Goodness, there was a lot to think about when stitching in 1900.
Do you know what fudging is? To be avoided, anyways...
The phrase 'frowned upon' comes to mind. There was a deal of frowning upon in those days, eh.

haven't heard the term fudging for ages, used as in fudge the figures ( to make it appear to balance)I love old needlework books and the household management ones which tell you how many tablecloths etc you should have.

Yes - if you fudge something, you are trying to make it look right even though it truly isn't.
